Our Story
I was kind, but not compassionate.
That was the revelation I came to in December 2021, while in class pursuing my certification in chaplaincy. There I was, listening to my professor describe, in the most beautiful detail, what compassion really meant. I was in awe of how those words made me feel. On one hand, I felt loved and supported. On the other hand, those words made me feel like I should be doing more with my heart, and I was underutilizing the capacity of it. I also realized that I desired to be compassionate. That feeling of being so loved and supported; I wanted to give that to others. We all deserve to have that experience. But where do I begin?
Well, I prayed and I pondered. Then, eureka!! Solve a problem, Juanita! The solution was almost instantaneous; help low-income bariatric patients with affording their vitamins and supplements. Now, you may be wondering how I came to that solution. Well, I am a bariatric patient myself. I also feel the burden of affording my daily vitamins because medicare doesn't cover them. Actually, no insurance company covers them.
Rather quickly after my surgery, I realized how this life-long expense could cause financial strain. However, after my eureka moment, I chose to think beyond my own challenges and use the skills and tools I have acquired over the years and create a solution that helped others. That was the key to expanding my heart and developing compassion. So as I lay, brick by brick, I remind myself that while our beginning is small, our vision is big.
The Barifund Inc. is a charitable organization that represents my evolution as a philanthropist and social servant. It also represents the importance of supporting others as they courageously pursue health and wellness. We are a village, and that's what it takes to win!
